Apollo is coming along nicely! A part of the upcoming Olympians series. Mostly just some highlights and linework left to do, and then I’ll scan it in and decide whether I like the gray background or not. Luckily, I scanned all the backgrounds in, so I can put it back in in Photoshop with little problem.

They’ll eventually be HERE at my store.

O ho lay dee odl lee o, o ho lay dee odl ay, O ho lay dee odl lee o, lay dee odl lee o lay! This little gem is an alternative movie poster for the movie The Sound of Music. Representing the movie is an illustrated homage to the Lonely Goatherd, the puppet play put on by Julie Andrews and the children featuring the stringy marionettes of the mother, father, and baby goats.

Alternative movie poster design for the 2000 horror fantasy thriller The Cell by director Tarsem Singh. This dark movie featured Jennifer Lopez, Vince Vaughn, and Vincent D’Onofrio in the visual wonderland of the dream world of the mind.

My version of the poster features a white hummingbird to play off the bird and hummingbird imagery throughout the movie, both from the villain and his victims, and the pure white of innocence as an important part of the movies visuals. This plays against the background of green, which is the color of the mind and of dreams. The carver logo, which plays a major part in the movie, cradles the dead hummingbird similar to the ‘cell’ that gives the movie its name.

This alternative movie poster is an homage to the science fiction classic directed by Ridley Scott and based on the short storyDo Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by Philip K. Dick. This image was done as a simple silhouette of the film’s token android, Rachel. The background was created as an abstract representation of a spacial anomoly or nebula, with the origami unicorn overlain on the shadow figure.

re-imagined Alien movie posters by Aaron Wells :: via etsy.com

Many thanks to Heyoscarwilde for showing this gallery of my posters!

In creating these, I really just wanted to focus on the token ETs from the series, and in a minimal manner while retaining my painterly style. The images were to rely on the contrast between the negative and positive space to create the main, simple shape of the aliens and their terrifying teeth.

I also added a poster to the series for the non-prequel Prometheus that released back in June:

This alternative movie poster is an homage to the campy, over the top, and touching movie ‘The Fifth Element’ by French director Luc Besson. This image was done as a simple silhouette of the fifth element herself, with her trademark orange hair, floating through space. The background was created as an abstract representation of a spacial anomoly or nebula, with the symbols of the four elements floating within. The entire image was designed to give an ethereal, spacey feel to a funky, wacky little sci-fi number.

This alternative movie poster is an homage to the trippy fantasy/sci-fi drama ‘The Fountain’ by Darren Aronofsky. The main image is an illustration of Hugh Jackman’s character in the final stage of the movie, moving through space towards an area known as Xebulba by the Mayans, encased in a biosphere. The orb is reminiscent of an atom, flying through the microcosmos, as a sort of metaphor for the Victorian idea of conception, as he flies into the dying cluster of stars and Nebulae in order to bring his wife back to life.

Another set of progress shots on upcoming movie posters. This time I’ll be moving back to Sci-Fi with the Fountain and the Fifth Element.

Some progress shots on the paintings for some movie posters for the movies Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age.  Trying to start incorporating some underpainting in the final images, as shown in the un-rendered crown in the first and the red dress in the Golden Age. Also unsure about the background in the golden one. Might change it to a darker greyish color.

This alternative movie poster is an homage to the scifi masterpiece ‘Sunshine’ by Danny Boyle. The main image is an interpretation of the golden sun suit from the movie as an iconographic image akin to a heiroglyphic image of the Egyptian sun god Ra. This portrayal is metaphor for the reigniting of the sun by the main character, giving life by powering the sun.
